introduction

There are three main goals with eczema treatment:

• Healing the skin so it can work as an effective
spacerbarrier

• Keeping it healthy

• Treating symptoms

There is a broad range of treatments available for eczema. Some are based on conventional medicine, others on natural active ingredients. It may take time to find the right one for you but the way you use treatments affects their success. Don’t try several new ones at once because if your symptoms do improve, you won’t know which treatment has worked.

What are Steroids?
Steroid creams and ointments reduce inflammation and symptoms associated with flare-up. Used in short bursts and at the right strength, you will avoid side effects such as thinning of the skin. Oral
corticosteroids (Prednisolone) can be used in moderation for a bad flare but has side effects if used over time.

What are Phytosterols?
Phytosterols are extracted from the soya bean and share some therapeutic effect with cortisone. They may provide sufferers with a natural and gentle alternative to steroid treatments.

Creams and Ointments
Don’t worry if you feel a slight stinging or prickling sensation when applying a cream or ointment to areas of broken skin. This is a common reaction and should not stop you from continuing with the treatment.
